All real living is meeting. — Martin Buber (1923)

We encounter the world through interfaces: our bodies and senses; screens, machines and technologies; architecture and landscape; borders between places, histories and cultures.

In Buddhist philosophy, perception unfolds through six faculties—eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind—and their corresponding fields: form, sound, smell, taste, touch and mental phenomena. This sensory framework reminds us that perception is never detached from encounter: the sensing body is always already in relation with a world beyond itself.

An interface is not merely a boundary. It is a site of encounter—where differences touch, resist, affect and transform one another. INTER-FACE:ing LuxuryLogico captures this continuous and unfinished process: a state of being in relation.

Curatorial Statement

Shuchen Wang

Curated by Shuchen Wang, INTER-FACE:ing brings the work of Taiwanese artist collective LuxuryLogico into the particular architectural, historical and ecological context of AaltoSiilo in Oulu. Across three physical installations and three immersive VR works, LuxuryLogico creates a milieu in which human, machinic and ecological agencies meet. Rather than positioning technology as spectacle or the human as the centre of experience, the works invite us to inhabit shifting relations between body, machine and environment—a relational approach the curator describes as a techno-ecological interface.

At AaltoSiilo, these relations acquire another material and temporal dimension. The former industrial structure—designed by Alvar and Aino Aalto, within the wider architectural legacy shared with Elissa Aalto and recognised through the inscription of Aalto Works on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2026—is not a neutral container but an active bridge between past and present, production and transformation, individual perception and collective memory.

The name LuxuryLogico opens a question at the heart of the exhibition: What is luxury on a planet under pressure and in a world of multiple crises? Beyond material accumulation and consumption lies a different logic. INTER-FACE:ing proposes that Earth’s true luxuries may instead be time, nature, human connection, ecological symbiosis and freedom. This proposition extends the exhibition beyond technological experience towards questions of how we choose to live together within interconnected systems. LuxuryLogico’s installations become not representations of such interdependence, but experiences to be sensed and inhabited.

Across bodies and machines, past and present, Taiwan and Finland, INTER-FACE:ing asks what may become possible when seemingly distant worlds begin to touch, interact and connect.

Artist Collective

LuxuryLogico

LuxuryLogico is a multidisciplinary artist collective founded by Genghao Chang†, Genghwa Chang, Kunying Lin and Yi Chen in Taipei in 2010. Working across visual art, kinetic installation, sound, technology, performance and interdisciplinary production, the collective draws inspiration from natural environments while examining contemporary society and changing relationships between technology and human experience. Its practice brings technological systems and humanistic concerns into dialogue rather than treating them as opposing fields.

LuxuryLogico’s award-winning projects span museums, biennials, public art, architecture and performance internationally. Recent projects include the solo exhibition Cosmic Sketches at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei and presentations in Berlin, Weimar, Osaka and across Taiwan.

Curator

Shuchen Wang

Shuchen Wang (PhD, DA) is a Helsinki-based researcher and curator working across contemporary art, critical heritage studies, museology and cultural diplomacy. Her practice explores relationships between art, technology, cultural identity, collective memory, entangled history and the environment. She has published internationally on art and society, exhibition mediation, cultural policy and digital heritage, and presented her research at major international forums including CAA, CIHA and ICOM. She serves as an expert evaluator for European research programmes, including COST, EIT Culture & Creativity and Horizon Europe.

For INTER-FACE:ing, she develops the concept of the techno-ecological interface, examining how human, technological and ecological agencies emerge through relation. The project brings LuxuryLogico’s work into dialogue with post-industrial sites, cultural contexts and artistic practices in Finland and beyond.

Music Collaborator

Lau Nau

Lau Nau, aka Laura Naukkarinen, is a Finnish composer and sound artist whose practice brings together voice, traditional instruments, modular synthesisers and field recordings. Her work extends from albums and live performance to film music, multichannel sound installation, sound design and practices of collective listening. She has performed internationally for more than two decades, with appearances in Japan, the United States and across Europe. Her sound design work received the Finnish State Prize for the Performing Arts in 2021, and her score for Katja Gauriloff’s film Je’vida received the Jussi Award for Best Original Music in 2024.

For this exhibition, Lau Nau collaborates with LuxuryLogico on The Past Is a Foreign Country, in which musical materials by Lau Nau and Sontag Shogun are reworked by LuxuryLogico within the installation, extending the work’s exploration of place, environmental traces and industrial memory through sound.

Performance Collaborator

TaikaBox

TaikaBox is an Oulu-based dance and technology organisation founded by Finnish choreographer and dance artist Tanja Råman and British visual artist and interactive systems designer John Collingswood. Their practice brings physical movement into dialogue with digital and interactive technologies, combining performance, artistic research, community engagement and international collaboration. TaikaBox describes its work as combining technology, movement, community, sustainability and creativity, with a particular emphasis on cross-media collaboration between dance and technology.

For the finissage, TaikaBox presents a live performance in response to LuxuryLogico’s installations, through which the human body encounters technological and kinetic systems. The performance extends the exhibition’s central question of the interface into live movement: body meets machine, performance meets kinetic installation, and Taiwan meets Oulu.
